History of the Sisterhood Conference
1985 – 2018
Sisterhood Conference began as a dream, a dream of two geographically close districts joining together for an afternoon of tea, camaraderie, and a sharing of ideas to better shape the future of the Daughters of Penelope on the West Coast of the United States.
Mary Chicos, District Governor #21, made a call to Helen Ramos, District Governor #20, and suggested meeting on a spring afternoon in 1985, halfway between the furthest reaches of the two districts in a sleepy town along the California Coast. And so it began, on May 4, 1985 in Santa Barbara, California…the Annual Sisterhood Conference.
That first Sisterhood Conference consisted of lunch at a local restaurant, then a half-block walk to the Independent Order Of Oddfellows Hall. There the members of the local Daughters of Penelope, Delos #103, had arranged for a meeting room followed by tea and coffee served on fine china and silverware brought from members’ homes. After sharing ideas and hopes for the future, the sisters in attendance began the process of forging a relationship that exits to this day…30 years later.
Today’s one-day conference shares the same goals as the original, but now includes the sisters from Districts #20, #21, #22, and #17, which encompasses much of the Western United States. The event provides a relaxed atmosphere for contemplation and participation. Although the format of the event has changed slightly, the sisters still meet to discuss the direction of the Daughters of Penelope; share a meal together; and are provided either an educational or cultural learning experience during the day’s program.
While hosting is on a rotational basis among the districts, with a local chapter offering to manage the logistics of the event, the District Governors determine the emphasis for discussion. Grand Lodge Officers and Liaisons are invited to attend and participate. On occasion, welcoming and/or closing evening events are planned as well.
A variety of experiences await the participant of a Sisterhood Conference. Professional speakers to local craftspeople have graced the Conference. Everything from Scottish Dancers to Casino Nights have been on the program. Conferees get to experience all the above, while meeting new “sisters” for future companionship and sisterhood in the Daughters of Penelope.
